The Backstory

I had been wanting some type of hobby car, nothing something ultra nice nor in need of too much work. I basically was looking for something that I could tinker on from time to time.

I was originally thinking about a VW Squareback because my grandfather used to own one. However, I began looking more towards a “Bug” (Type 1) due to greater car and parts availability. After researching the VW Type 1, I soon realized that I would not be happy with any Type 1 I could find, but would want a more rare model. I had grown fond of the “Oval’s” and also the “Semiphore” models. Knowing the age of these units, finding one in a condition I could work with and afford would be next to impossible.

My wife had recently traded her VW Tiguan in on a VW Touareg. Seeing her black Touareg in the driveway made me realize that a black Squareback would make for a interesting old-and-new, side-by-side view.

Timing worked out well as I got a small bonus from work, and so I began the hunt for a Squareback.

I purchased this car as a hobby project. The selection of a Squareback was due to the fact that the first car that I remember my grandfather having was a VW Squareback. I am naming this project “JPD” after him, Joseph Patrick Doherty.
